Goodwood, Festival of Speed. Thursday, 12th of July 2018.
A motoring hill climb event and festival that takes place annually in the grounds of Goodwood House, West Sussex.
Upon arrival we were directed into a rather dusty field, already amazed by the selection of super fast cars. One, amazed because they were spectacular, and two because of the sheer amount of brick red dust which had coated them. You can presume the owners of these cars were not too happy about this (lets hope they had PPF) , but looking on the bright side... you could say it gave the car more of a rally look! The majority of people do drive to the event and the carpark on site allows for this, whilst others may be tempted to enter with style by using the helicopter taxi. These people aren't messing around, looking down on everyone else... literally.
At the entrance of the event there were a number of planes and helicopters on display, shadowed by the infamous track itself, already roaring with supercars circuiting at 9am. The timing could not have been more perfect, as when walking up to the start line, a Lamborghini Centenario was revving it’s engine ready to go. As a car enthusiast, Timmy's excitement levels had already been taken to the max, turning into a 12 year old boy, and was unable to stay still. It turned out that this wasn't the maximum level of thrill he would reach during the day, for a long line of the new McLaren Senna’s were sat behind. For any octane heads reading this it was a spectacular sight. Name any supercar, it was there. Pagani, Koenigsegg, Bugatti, Ferrari. The list is goes on.
These super cars could be found in the super car paddock, along side motoring journalists, vloggers and manufacturers. It made for a very informative experience, as there was an opportunity to speak to these car lovers and gain more information on your favourite motors. These were also accompanied but today’s HyperCars and Race cars. Such as the Le Mans cars which are kept in their post racing state, still covered with bumps and scratches (and a few dead bug smudges dotted here and there! Yum!).
However, it was not only modern cars that featured on this day, and as we walked around the ‘Cartier Style Et Luxe’ which was showcasing some of the most exquisite motors around,
we were lucky enough to observe a variety of vintage and classic cars with a monumental history behind them. Such as a 1994 Bugatti EB 110 SS, and a 1952 Jaguar XK120 Roadster.
Porsche also had a featured 'vintage' section which we were particularly drawn to. In order to commemorate Porche's 70th anniversary they were showcasing the new Porsche 911 which had been reimagined by Singer. Taking elements from older models of the 911 collection, and combining them to create this retro looking car with variety of fun interiors. In our eyes, it was a right beauty, and was left us wondering how to scrounge enough money in order to buy one! Irresistible! We could be here for a while though!
As mentioned previously, the celebration of Porche's 70th year (and also Land Rover and Lotus) made this Goodwood particularly special. A one to remember! After fireworks, both manufacturers, Porche and Land Rover, paraded the models from throughout the years around the track, almost like a timeline. It was a glorious sight, and a beautiful way to top off our experience at the festival of speed.
If you aren't as into cars some of the other visitors, the festival itself offers a variety of other experiences. For an adrenaline rush VR simulators are a popular attraction, or even drone flying! Furthermore, food stalls were dotted all over the grounds (although slightly over priced, Eg: £11 for a small fish and chips) they offered a delicious selection of goodies. If you are a member make sure to check out the Kinrara, a ‘members only enclosure’ (ooh la la I know!), located beside the first corner of the track, offering a loooovely strong pims.
Overall the day was spectacular for providing us with memories and fantastic pictures. People always say 'there is no place quite like Goodwood', and we can see exactly why. Even if you aren’t an octane head it’s a great excuse to enjoy a drink!
