To me, nothing is more satisfying than finding a band with a small following, hardly any songs but are packed with potential. I am not entirely sure how I stumbled across this band (I have a feeling I was looking at bands in Leeds!) but boy am I happy I did!
The band which, quite frankly I have been obsessed with the past six months, are called Jabbawoki a band from Leeds consisting of four which formed all the way back in 2012. Astonishing finger work by the lead guitarist, Finlay Wallace, alongside him on the bass is Matthew Edmunds. Tom Cranston’s phenomenal singing is something one can simply not brush aside and dismiss. Last and by far not least, boogying at the back is the rhythmic genius Max Lord on the drums, who I can’t stress enough is an incredible drummer. They have also played in some pretty cool venues in and around Leeds and I plan to see them live very very soon!
I was astounded when I first saw they had only 600 monthly listeners and all three songs combined have only 37,802 streams, warning most of these may have been me, (at time of writing) on Spotify, the numbers truly do not serve them justice!
With a unique and raw sound where a fusion of genres, coming from different tastes from each and every band member, can be often heard. An assortment of sounds taken from genres such as funk, rap and alternative music. Artists such as Anderson .Paak, Kendrick Lamar and Funky Destination are just a handful of artists that have helped inspire Jabbawoki to encompass the elements of music as previously stated. Like come on, we are talking about a guitar band that is influenced by West Coast hip hop here, how much more unique and flipping cool can you get?!
Oh also, the name Jabbawoki. Yeah it isn’t a reference to Alice and Wonderland, turns out it was just from a name generator, but I think that just makes me love them even more!
Looking forward to seeing this band grow over the next year and can see them gaining an ever-growing fan-base.
