How to be more like the man, the myth, the musician.
Jimothy Lacoste aka Timothy Gonzales is a nineteen year old musician from Camden, London, and our new favourite thing. Why we love him so much? Well… his effervescent youthful lyrics, and down to earth, relatable scenarios, which are depicted through his five songs found on Spotify.
When googled he comes under the definition of ‘rap’, and although having elements of this genre, we have come to the unanimous decision that there is nothing quite like Mr Lacoste.
Some may call his sound drab, but strangely enough his deadpan vocals compliment the repetitive lo-fi midi beats. He is a true original.
Lacoste began showcasing his music and posting it on the inter-web in 2016, his track “Getting Busy” giving him a break through in 2017. Ever since, we have watched him become more popular, having gained an increase in media attention and performance slots at festivals such as Field Day and Latitude.
However, More impressive than his beats is perhaps his lyrics. They are fresh and relevant to the modern day society featuring topics from the London underground system to drugs in association with teens. And perhaps that is why he has become so popular among the youths.
For example his song “Future Bae”, depicts his aspirations on the theme of love. A stanza taken from this song goes…
“You'll be lovely and peng
Even if I drew on your face with a pen
Even if you wake up with a couple of zits
Even if you ain't got huge big tits
Even if you fell and your nose got splits
Me and you darling'll both do bits”
Its simple, and yet this simplicity makes it real and witty. The message it portrays is also rather lovely. In his opinion his ’future little bae’ is flames, even if she ‘ain’t got huge big tits’. What girl doesn’t want to hear that?! But seriously, in a society like today, where women in rap music are named as ‘hoes’ and ‘bitches’ it is refreshing to see the focus not on womens image, rather the character and the acceptance of individuality and a ‘couple of zits’.
So… as you can see Jimothy Lacoste is rather cool! And the more we observe him on social media platforms such as Instagram (@jimothylacoste), flaunting his stuff, draped in Burberry macks, and skinny red jeans, one cannot help but envy his originality, and air of arrogance.
In addressing the statement we announced at the start, (how to be more like Jimothy Lacoste), the true answer is you can’t. He is original after all. But that doesn’t mean you cant try… We have to admit that as well as falling in love with his music, we have undoubtedly fallen for the man himself.
It is exciting to see the popularity of such musicians growing, people who have not gained this status from a desire for fame alone, but people with a genuine talent and ability to address current issues in society in an approachable way. We hope you'll join us in dressing more like Jimothy... braids and all, in order to spur on this positive revolution.
It seems our life is about to get ‘quite exciting’.
