After a winding drive we arrived at Churt Sculpture Park, about ten minutes off the A3, situated in a quaint village.

The entrance of the park embraces you with a collection of sculptures, engulfed within a jungle like atmosphere. A small path led to the reception where we bought our tickets. The prices ranged from £5 to £10, £10 being your standard ticket, and exceptions such as students and OAP’s costed £5 entry (proof of ID was required for student tickets). Other price offers for families were available.

The park is open from 10am until 5pm every day of the week, all year round. When we visited it was an hour after opening, and a this point (on a Tuesday) it was fairly quiet. According to their website the peak visiting times are at 1-2pm on the weekend, which still is only considered to be moderately ‘busy’ due to the vast area of land the park covers.

Once we purchased our tickets the lady at the desk gave us some basic info on the park, telling us the four different coloured routes we can take, and how the total of all four equals up to around 2 miles. Doing all four colours (not wanting to miss anything!) we spent around an hour and a half walking. We were also allowed to take our dog around on a lead which means it is an ideal place for an alternative dog walk!

The sculpture park had an array of styles varying from each artist, some had a more classical style with realist shapes and forms, whilst others were much more abstract and unusual for example an elderly lady riding a dinosaur in the nude! A booklet was provided informing us who the artists were, and the price, most of the sculptures were for sale (if you're willing to splash out!).

At times the route did become a little confusing as you had to follow arrows planted to the side in the ground. At crossroads we would often find ourselves looking at the floor for any indication in what route to take. After this had happened a few times we did eventually decide to take our own route. When walking round we were particularly drawn towards a large flower, its petals were covered in colourful mosaic, made of tiles, beads and mirrored surfaces. The patterns reminded us somewhat of Gaudi.

To show the array of art in the grounds, such beauty from the flower piece was contrasted by one other sculpture, planted in the middle of the pond, bright pink you couldn't miss is, and it was shaped, well… like a vagina/boat? And yes yes apparently it does ‘squirt’. As you can imagine we were a little bit shocked by this piece, but we cannot deny it caused us much humour.

Besides the phallic sculptures and ‘tit boxes’ scattered about the park, we highly recommend the Churt Sculpture Park. With friendly staff, a mass of art, and the fact it is open all year round, there is really no excuse to miss out on this wonderful experience.
